COMPUTER EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM 

Salary �31,900 - �39,875

UKERNA is responsible for the development and 
maintenance of JANET, the UK academic and 
research network, which provides a national network 
and advanced IT communication facilities for further 
and higher education organisations and research 
council establishments. JANET also provides its 
customers with high speed access to the Internet. 
Pleasantly situated in rural Oxfordshire, within easy 
commuting distance of Didcot, Abingdon and 
Wantage, the company offers a friendly, hard-
working environment with a good team spirit and an 
active social calendar.

JANET CERT is a team of six that is responsible for 
providing computer security support to the 700 
institutions that are connected to the network around 
the United Kingdom. The CERT provides information 
and warning about computer security vulnerabilities 
and responds to computer security incidents 
including supporting institutions that have been 
compromised.

About the job

The CERT is an active team with a highly demanding 
role. The CERT Manager's job is to ensure that 
incidents are efficiently handled and that the targets 
in the Service Level Agreement are met or exceeded. 
The CERT Manager is also responsible for ensuring 
that regular reporting is carried out on the delivery of 
the service and that the processes and tools used 
within the team are continually developed. This role 
will suit someone who enjoys working with people 
and leading a busy and specialised team.

About you

The successful applicant will posses the following 
skills and qualifications:


The ability to communicate effectively in written and 
spoken English. 
A basic knowledge of budgeting procedures. 
An ability to provide leadership to a group of 
individuals to provide a coherent team that can work 
effectively with other groups within the company to 
achieve common goals. 
An ability to gain respect and co-operation of 
technical and managerial staff at institutions 
connected to JANET and with the staff of UKERNA's 
major partners and peer organisations. 
Knowledge of computer security, plus experience of 
working within such an environment and a track-
record of success in computer security work. 
At least five years' work experience, some of which 
should have been in a managerial role (ideally 
managing technically qualified staff in an operations 
environment). 
A sound level of general education, ideally including a 
degree in a relevant field.
This post is a permanent, full-time position.
