Here's an opening for a Unix guru obsessed with security.

UNIX DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER

Symark Software has an opening in its technical department for a senior Unix
development engineer.

Job Specification:

The individual will participate in the software design and development of
Symark's Unix product line. Symark's products provide capabilities in Unix
security and system administration. Symark sells Unix products to the
Fortune 1000 companies.

The tasks consist of:

1) Isolating and fixing bugs as identified by our customers.
2) Porting across various Unix environments.
3) Coding and developing new enhancements to respond to the needs of the
marketplace.

>From time to time the individual will also be expected to assist the
technical support staff in the resolution of difficult customer problems and
sales situations.

Technical Qualifications:

The individual must have at least 3 years in depth experience in developing
products in C for the Unix environment. Experience of systems
administration and networking is required. The position that is open is
that of a systems programmer as opposed to an applications programmer. This
requires an in depth understanding of how Unix works, not merely a good
understanding of how to use it. Knowledge of installation/compilation of
the gnu products such as gcc, emacs etc. is required. Knowledge of TCP/IP,
DNS, NIS, NIS+ is required. Experience with the development of client server
systems is also required (Note "development of" not "implementation of").
The programmer must also have familiarity with make and makefiles.
Familiarity with multiple unix environments is required.

The individual should have knowledge of the following:
sudo, tar, PKI, ssh, securid, Kerberos, C2, DCE, xterm

Other Qualifications:

The individual must have good written and communication skills. Much of our
communication with our customers is via the telephone and so good telephone
communication is essential. Good written communication is also a requirement
since the developers are also responsible for the creation and update of the
associated product manuals as well as specification and design documents. As
one of a small group of developers the individual must be prepared to pitch
in to do what it takes. It is absolutely necessary to be a team player.
The individual should be a self starter, be prepared to recognize both
product and procedural issues and step in and fix them. Since Symark both
develops and resells products, the individual must be capable of coming up
to speed on new products and technologies. The individual is expected to
keep current with technologies which will often mean independent study
outside of the normal work hours. The individual would typically be a Unix
devotee and would not have a significant history with Windows environments
(beyond the typical use of Office products)

The individual should live within a reasonable commuting distance from
Westlake Village (Ventura County, CA).

A sense of humor is an asset.

The Company:

Symark is a 16 year old company involved in the sale of software products.
Symark specializes in Unix products in the areas of system administration
and security. Symark has offices in Westlake Village. The normal working
hours for technical staff are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
