Thanks for the ssh suggestion.  I'm a Unix novice.

I was able to get JSch and Amazon working together programmatically.

You still can execute it with ssh remotely?
 
Anyway, recovery must work even after non-graceful restart. So, if you know
steps to reproduce this recovery failure (or at least can share machine with
failed database) we could try to look at the problem deeper.
