There is another very common possibility.  Many cars  are programmed to 
have the "check engine" light come on when the mileage reaches a certain 
point.  The idea is to get the owner to bring the car into the dealership 
to have it checked out, and while it's there the dealer can perform routine 
maintenance that otherwise might have been overlooked.

Still, most owners have no way of knowing if the light is on due to a 
problem or not, so the only way for them to get the question resolved is to 
take it to the dealer.
