You probably are referring to midi files, which are synthesized music.

Yes, the MP3 and Real Audio files give the best listening results.

The Scour.com that Luc recommends is a great dedicated search engine.
However, you only need the short URL to get to the site:

http://www.scour.com/

~~

Visit MP3.com:

http://www.mp3.com/

You might wish to visit MP3.com's French music page:

http://genres.mp3.com/music/world_folk/world_traditions/european/french/

~~

Here is another site you might wish to visit:

Mp3 charts: French Top 10 (They actually list a top 20)

http://www.mtvmp3s.com/france10.shtml

~~

Here are two sites to help you locate MP3 files for downloading:

http://gnutella.wego.com/

http://www.napster.com/

~~

See Real.com's Real Guide Page

http://realguide.real.com/

~~

You can enjoy a lot of music without downloading -- you can listen to
Internet Radio:

http://dir.yahoo.com/News_and_Media/Radio/Stations/Web_Directories/
Internet_Broadcasts/

Note: The above URL is actually one continuous line and should be
entered into your browser's address box as one line.

Here is a list of 52 radio stations in France that I found using MIT's
search engine:

http://wmbr.mit.edu/cgi-bin/nation?ccode=fr

I am now listening to a French radio station. :-)

~~

Do you have Internet Explorer 5.0 or above and Windows MediaPlayer?
You should activate your Radio button on your IE browser. Go to the
WindowsMedia.com site and set the language to French to get a listing
of French stations:

I am now listening to Oui FM located in Paris.

At minimum you should have Windows Media Player and Real Player
installed. You might wish to have a third party MP3 player such as
WinAmp or Sonique. These all come in free versions:

http://www.winamp.com/

http://www.sonique.com/

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/en/default.asp

http://www.real.com/

~~~
Lastly, take a stop at the CNET page for some guidance and tutorials in
collecting digital music and finding radio stations:
http://music.cnet.com/music/0-1566076.html
There...that should get you started.  Happy listening, Joanne. :-)
