Are there suggestions for a serif body type suitable for newsletters
which might be an improvement on Times New Roman? Attributes which are
important are compactness with good legibility, and a plus for a more
"modern" look. Not paying for the typeface also a plus for a volunteer
organization. I use the type at 12 and 11 points to keep the product
readable for older people.

Bookman is less compact and more old fashioned. Garamond is slightly more
interesting in construction, but is only slightly more compact, while
being of lesser weight (so it does not read as easily at a distance). I
have seen some good fonts in newsletters which seem readable yet look
more "modern:" this is what I seek.
