It would be next to impossible to search within a company Intranet, but
there are some people directory search engines you can try and use. In
your case, we need to find a people or company search engine that has
an International database.

On the following page, there is a listing of Search directories (Phone
books, white pages, yellow pages) for China:

Unfortunately, most of those are yellow pages or business pages
listings. That may be hard to find your friend, unless you know the
business where he works.

Just in case your friend is somewhere else in Asia, you might try some
of the links here on this Asia page at InfoSpace.com, such as Hong
Kong, Singapore, etc.:

Although it may prove difficult, you might try any web search engine
that allows quotations and just enter your friend's name and see if he
has posted to some forum that is archived on the web. Example, if you
were to use AltaVista:

http://www.altavista.com/

...and we wanted to find Ling Wong, then we would enter into the search
box, "Ling Wong" with the quotes.

Maybe your friend has a web page somewhere and there is a contact
address on it. You never know till you try. :-)

My last suggestion is to check a few of the US email Directory sites,
such as Yahoo's people search or WhoWhere. The reason for that is that
many Chinese opt to have a secondary Hotmail or Yahoo email address to
have an alternate email address apart from their company address, which
often is more strict in their usage of those accounts. If they get one
of these email addresses, there is a good chance that account might
appear on one of these databases.

Good luck. Your quest won't be easy.
