Yes, Joanne, there is a Unitarian. In fact, there is a
Unitarian-Universalist Association in Boston, Massachusetts, which acts as a
coalition of many independent congregations which were formerly just
Unitarian or Universalist. The history of this denomination goes back to
Europe, especially to King Seigusmund of Transylvania, who issued an edict
of religious tolerance. Though there are many Unitarian Christians, and the
denomination grew out of Christian traditions, today it is a church which
does not require members to assent to a particular creed. It preaches
tolerance of different viewpoints and draws inspiration from all world
religions. It promotes individual freedom to question theological concepts
which may be outmoded or harmful by today's standards. One Unitarian
minister told me "Our faith goes beyond reason, but never contrary to it."
That seems to sum it up quite well. You can get more information from the
UUA web site, which I believe is www.uua.org, but if not, just do a search
for Unitarian Universalist Association. Don't confuse it with Unity or the
Unification Church (that's the moonies, not the UU's).
Best wishes, Helen G.
