George, I'll furnish some sites for you below, but perhaps you should 
define for us what an "intellectual life" is to you.  In America, there 
is a great diversity of cultures and intelligences, but for the most 
part I think Americans use their intelligence for work and play.  That 
would be our "intellectual life" as I see it.
