Most of the serious Linux people hang out on SlashDot
http://www.slashdot.org and Freshmeat http://www.freshmeat.net .
(I'm one of the "anonymous cowards" at Slashdot.)
News often shows up here sometimes months before it hits Linux
Journal or Linux Today. If you want to know what projects (both GPL
and non-GPL) are in the works at various companies, what the latest
software is, these are the "insider's" sources.
The bad news is that the information isn't prettily laid out like it
is on the commercial magazine sites, and much of it is reported by
software people who are actively involved with the projects they are
reporting on, not journalists who come in after the project is
(mostly) done. So the writing quality is uneven, although the
technical information is less likely to be munged.
The problem is often exacerbated by the fact that there's a LOT more
news on Slashdot than any of the other sites. It's really necessary
to check it daily rather than weekly to keep up. If you don't mind
drinking from a fire hose, Slashdot and to a lesser extent Freshmeat
are great sites for information.
