I searched as well. I did find a reason they might have needed cats. Seems
like the cats had been eliminated in the 1400s as it was thought cats were
evil. I can see the need, but can't find any verification of the story. My
previous suggestion to check archives of the New York Times or other papers
having archives dating back to 1948. Hopefully, one day, those will be
available on line as well.
I'm on a foreign language list. I'll send the question to them.
