Movie lines that define the moment
By Jules Alcantara
Inquirer News Service
HAVEN'T you, at some point, used a certain line from a movie? Whether we
are in the throes of a new romance (a crush or a new significant other)
or in the middle of a relationship that may end at the altar, movie
lines never fail to define the moment.
They may be cheesy, sappy or even downright eeeww and corny. But one
thing is sure, they have secured a place in our memories.
'Meet Joe Black'
"I know it's a cornball thing, but love is passion, obsession, someone
you can't live without. If you don't start with that, what are you going
to end up with? I say fall head over heels. Find someone you love like
crazy and who'll love you the same way back. And how do you find him?
Forget your head and listen to your heart...
Run the risk, if you get hurt, you'll come back. Because the truth is,
there is no sense living your life without this. To make the journey and
not fall deeply in love -- well, you haven't lived a life at all. You
have to try. Because if you haven't tried, you haven't lived...
Stay open. Who knows? Lightning could strike."
I didn't particularly love the story because I was so busy ogling at
Brad Pitt's divine face. But these lines, uttered by William Parrish
(Anthony Hopkins) to his daughter Susan (played by Claire Forlani)
literally took my breath away. If you are quietly ruminating on whether
to say yes or make a go of a relationship, this is the best line to
remember.
'With Honors'
Courtney (Moira Kelly): "What are you doing?"
Monty (Brendan Fraser): "I'm ending our friendship." (Then kisses her
passionately.)
As Brendan Fraser's character was kissing her, I was screaming and super
kilig. Who wouldn't? For the longest time, I was dying to use this line.
But then again, my significant other never gave me the chance to say a
word in edgewise and just kissed me.
'As Good As it Gets'
Melvin Udall: "You make me wanna be a better man."
Adored this movie. Who would have thought that dysfunctionality would
ever look so real in the fantasy movie land? And who would have thought
that the actor whose eyebrows have a life of their own would be
responsible for uttering one of the most real and romantic movie lines
of all time?
'Notting Hill'
Anna Scott: "... I'm also a girl standing in front of a boy, asking him
to love her..." (to Hugh Grant)
People will kill me when I say I cringed when I heard Julia Roberts said
this. It felt so "awkward." But then again, I'm sure that's the subtext
of the scene and the line. But my word is good as gold-I am never going
to pray for an occasion when I will be able to use this line.
'Jerry Maguire'
Jerry Maguire: "I love you. You... complete me."
Dorothy Boyd: "Shut up. Just shut up. You had me at hello."
An informal survey shows this is the most used movie line ever. Point in
fact, my significant other used this line in one of his text messages.
Perfect, don't you think? "You complete me" is less than 160 characters.
Just make sure you don't say, "You complete me, Minime!" instead.
'Runaway Bride'
Maggie Carpenter: "I guarantee there will be tough times. And I
guarantee that at one point or another, one or both of us will want to
get out. But I also guarantee that if I won't ask you to be mine, I'll
regret it for the rest of my life. Because I know in my heart you are
the only one for me." (To Ike Graham, played by Richard Gere)
Another potential hit that, most likely, will be uttered by sweethearts.
Gosh, according to the grapevine, this line is usually "borrowed" by
those who give a jewelry box (with a nice glistening rock inside).
'Phenomenon'
George Malley: "Will you love me for the rest of my life?"
Lace Pennamin: "No, I will love you for the rest of mine."
Blue Arden, one of our resident anonymous writers, says this line was so
sweet it almost made him cry. Our lead correspondent could not help but
concur. Honestly, if someone used this line on me, I think I'd puke.
It's just too cheesy and I'm lactose-intolerant.
'My Best Friend's Wedding'
Michael: "If you love someone, you say it, say it right then and there,
out loud, otherwise the moment just passes you by." (To Julianne while
riding on the barge, under the bridge)
My tears flowed incessantly until about 10 scenes after this. This is
love's version of "Carpe Diem." How many of us have let the "moment"
pass us by? Let this coming Feb.14 not be one of those moments.
Julianne: ". Marry me. love me. let me make you happy." (To Michael by
the gazebo)
No, no, no! I shouted at the movie screen when Julia Roberts said this
line. To be honest, I cried at this scene. Out of sheer embarrassment.
Eeeks talaga!
'10 Things I Hate About You'
"I hate the way you talk to me.
I hate the way you talk to me and the way you cut your hair.
I hate the way you drive my car.
I hate it when you stare.
I hate your big dumb combat boots
And the way you read my mind.
I hate you so much it makes me sick-
It even makes me rhyme.
I hate the way you're always right.
I hate it when you lie.
I hate it when you make me laugh-even worse when you make me cry.
I hate it that you're not around
And the fact that you didn't call.
But mostly I hate the way
I don't hate you-
Not even close, not even a little bit, not any at all."
These lines, done in Shakespearean iambic pentameter, have been mass
e-mailed and forwarded by many. Many surely empathized with "heinous
bitch" Katarina Stratford's (played by the immensely talented Julia
Stiles) as her face crumbles and breaks toward the end of the monologue.
Perfect for those whose significant others are what could be described
as an "acquired taste."
'The End of the Affair'
"Love does not end when we don't see each other." (Sara Miles)
By far, the most effective of all. Graham Greene surely knows the secret
to good communication. Brevity. This line is what they call "tagos sa
buto."
'Chasing Amy'
Alyssa: "Why are we stopping?"
Holden: "Because I can't take this."
Alyssa: "Can't take what?"
Holden: "I love you."
Alyssa: "You love me?"
Holden: "I love you. And not in a friendly way, although I think we're
great friends. And not in a misplaced affection, puppy-dog way, although
I'm sure that's what you'll call it. And it's not because you're
unattainable. I love you. Very simple, very truly. You're the epitome of
every attribute and quality I've ever looked for in another person. I
know you think of me as just a friend, and that crossing that line is
the farthest thing from an option you'd ever consider. But I had to say
it. I can't take it anymore. I can't stand next to you without wanting
to hold you. I can't look into your eyes without feeling that longing
you only read about in trashy romance novels. I can't talk to you
without wanting to express my love for everything you are. I know this
will probably queer our friendship-no pun intended-but I had to say it,
because I've never felt this before, and I like who I am because of it.
And if bringing it to light means we can't hang out anymore, then that
hurts me. But I couldn't allow another day to go by without getting it
out there, regardless of the outcome, which by the look on your face is
to be the inevitable shoot-down. And I'll accept that. But I know some
part of you is hesitating for a moment, and if there is a moment of
hesitation, that means you feel something, too. All I ask is that you
not dismiss that-at least for 10 seconds-and try to dwell in it. Alyssa,
there isn't another soul on this ******* planet who's ever made me half
the person I am when I'm with you, and I would risk this friendship for
the chance to take it to the next plateau. Because it's there between
you and me. You can't deny that. And even if we never speak again after
tonight, please know that I'm forever changed because of who you are and
what you've meant to me, which-while I do appreciate it-I'd never need a
painting of birds bought at a diner to remind me of." (Holden Mcneil is
played by Ben Affleck and Alyssa is played by Joey Lauren Adams)
What can I say? I'm speechless.

My wife says if I go fishing one more time, she's going to leave me. Gosh,
I'm going to miss her.
