I just now became aware of this site featuring a product called
"Mailbug."

http://www.landel.com/

With MailBug, anyone with a telephone line can get email without the
hassle or expense of a computer. MailBug makes checking email as
convenient as checking an answering machine. Its easy to use and
affordable.

It will cost you $149. Not cheap, but a lot better than the cost of a
computer. It looks pretty cool, to me:

This Mailbug also offers, for an additional fee, the e-mail account
service. The downside is that you can only connect directly to a
Landel account. Grandma would have to have local access or her long
distance bill will be very costly. However, on the plus side, "if your
ISP has a POP3 server that is reachable from the Internet, you may use
the MailBug to retrieve email from this server."
