The Graphics File format FAQ I referenced referred to two Reference
works describing XBM:

--------

Xlib-C language X Interface, Gettys, James, and Robert W. Scheiffler,
Consortium Standard, X Version 11, Release 5, First Revision, August
1991.

Xlib Programming Manual, Nye, Adrian, third edition, O'Reilly &
Associates, Inc. Sebastopol, CA, 1992.

--------

I should think within those books are where you will find the detail
you seek. Both of the above books are sold at Amazon and I would
assume also at other bookstores on the WWW. Amazon lists several other
Xlib resources. Just open Amazon.com into your browser:

http://www.amazon.com/

...and set the search box for Books and enter the keyword: Xlib

Your other options are to send e-mail to various contact addresses at
the X.org and inquire as to your needs:

The X.org resources page is here:

Kenton Lee's site lists many X resources, including a large listing of
USENET newsgroups that you could post your query.
