I like that word "free" too, but it can sometimes make the search more
difficult. :-)
When I first saw your question I was thinking about word processor
macros, but upon investigating the Macro Express program, I see that
you are looking for a type of program we refer to as "automation
utilities."
I do not see many free programs here, but you might run down the list
of macro software here:

Hmmm...I am scrolling down the automation utilities in Winfiles.com
now. Very little in the way of freeware.

Okay...this PoltergeistPro looks interesting:
<quote>
A next generation automation utility for Windows (95/98/NT4) machines.
It offers simple to complex event scheduling for programs, system
commands (like Shutdown, log off and restart) as well as simple pop-up
reminders. The keyboard macro feature can be used to provide simple
keystrokes to any Windows application. TCP/IP Networking features are
built in to allow changes to schedules on remote machines. Multiple
event schedule files can be maintained. The enhanced interface makes it
easy to use. (freeware)

I'll let you run down the list yourself, Francis, but if you can afford
it, you might check out the shareware product "EZ Macros"
