Often yes, if a list provides for archiving posts or digests.
All LISTSERV lists are archived and can be searched via e-mail. Most
Majordomo services do not easily make an archive service available on
their servers, but our Esosoft is an exception. We cannot search our
archives, though, in the manner that one can search LISTSERV archives.
However, you can use e-mail to hunt for a post in our list archives.
In fact, e-mail is the only way to get to our list archives on the
Esosoft servers.
Most of the major web-based mailing list services, such as ONElist,
EGroups, etc. archive list posts and/or digests and these archives are
searchable. Since often a login with password and cookies are
involved, it might prove difficult to use accmail methods to search an
archive. I am not going to go so far as to say it is completely
insurmountable by accmail methods, because I understand that one of the
WWW-to-email servers now give help overcoming sites that use cookies.
Otherwise, I think you have to consider these web-based services not
totally friendly to e-mail only users. This was one of the things in
my mind when I moved our list from ONElist.com to Esosoft.com .

You show an example here of another possibility for searching list
archives. Today, many listowners take advantage of free web-based
archival services. The site partners Liszt and Topica, will archive a
mailing list for free and these, I believe, are searchable on their
servers.
There are other such services today to archive searchable mailing lists:
eScribe is a popular site for listowners:
http://www.escribe.com/
ListQuest is another site used by several mailing lists to archive
their posts/digests:
http://www.listquest.com/
My two lists, SeeknFind and POP3, are archived at a site called:
"The Mail-Archive"
http://www.mail-archive.com/
http://www.mail-archive.com/seeknfind%40esosoft.com/
In looking at the source code of our archive page, I should think it
would be very easy to search by accmail methods. It is very easy to
use in a browser, as well. As to the first two services I mentioned, I
have not tested them with accmail methods, so I could not say for sure
how friendly those sites are to e-mail_only users.
