Hi,
I do not know much about this (I can only connect to irc.satlink.com with
my account and it is full of youger people for which I have only used it to
communicate with friends abroad) but I can tell you IRC stans for Internet
Relay Chat ,the system, and mIRC is a special software to use in IRC (like
pirch,etc).
You can get the latest mIRC (shareware) from www.mirc.com or
www.mirc.co.uk or many other places.
Compared to other clients like MS Chat (or Comic Chat, it comes with IE) :
MS is easier but mIRC is more configurable and comes with an extensive help
file covering IRC issues and not only mIRC (so I do not think you will
need a tutorial) and channels.
You can also use your browser.
Here are some mIRC related links:

http://www.mircx.com

sure there are free clients at www.thefreesite.com and antivirus too, which
I think it will be a good idea to have.
