This will be of interest to some grav/maggers and SEG mining types. There
should be a strong geophysical component. Email me if you want the WORD
attachment.

"World Class mineral deposits in
Eastern and Southern Africa"
- their origin and how to find them -

20-23 September 1999, Dar es Salaam

First Announcement

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To : The geoscientific community in Eastern and Southern Africa
>From : Geodesa-project at SEAMIC, Dar es Salaam (Kunduchi area)
Date : 12 July 1999

Dear Sir / Madam,

The GEODESA project is pleased to announce an event which may be of interest to you or
any other geoscientists in your organisation. Anyone interested is kindly invited to
attend GEODESA's next workshop on "World Class mineral deposits in Eastern and
Southern Africa" - their origin and how to find them -, which we will be organising
from 20-23 September 1999, in SEAMIC's offices in Dar es Salaam.

Some details are given below, and in the attached file. We have so far secured the
collaboration from a series of well known experts from the region, who will act as
keynote speakers. In addition, delegates from the 13 Geological Surveys who are
participating in the regional GEODESA-project will attend, and present some of their
own work. We also highly value the active participation of the industry.

The deadline for submitting a title and an abstract of an oral or poster presentation
is 20 August 1999. We encourage everybody to use e-mail (preferably
[EMAIL PROTECTED] or alternatively [EMAIL PROTECTED] , in case of problems).

I would also like to draw your attention to the fact that GEODESA will demonstrate and
release its latest digital product on 24 September 1999 (immediately after the
workshop). The completed digital, GIS based inventory of regional geochemical and
geophysical surveys of the 13 countries will be made available on CD-ROM.

Please find more details in the attached 1st announcement. We look forward to
welcoming you in Dar es Salaam.

Sincerely yours,

Barthold Schroot
Chief Geoscientist, GEODESA-project

Objectives of the workshop:
The main objectives of the workshop are to stimulate interaction between the
geoscientists who are working in the region, whether from National Geological Surveys,
Industry (mining and mineral exploration companies) or Universities, and discuss the
geological terrains for mineral exploration in the region.

The following questions will be addressed in the workshop sessions:

1 How and where were the different types of mineral deposits formed? (role of
metallogenic and empirical models in mineral exploration; role of (regional) tectonic
setting).
2 Where to look for potential world-class mineral deposits in Eastern and Southern
Africa? (area selection from the regional to local scale).
3 How to find them? Which exploration techniques (for example geochemical,
geophysical, remote sensing) are most suitable for finding the different types of
deposits in the region?

Workshop sessions:

Session 1: Mineral deposits in Archean cratons. (examples: structurally-hosted
gold-quartz veins, Komatiite-hosted Ni-sulphide and volcanic massive sulphides in
greenstone belts)

Session 2: Mineral deposits in Early Proterozoic basins and mobile belts. (examples:
Shearzone related gold and sediment-hosted copper-cobalt deposits)

Session 3: Mineral deposits in Mid Proterozoic Kibaran belts. (examples: Nickel
bearing sulphides in ultrabasics, tin-tungsten deposits related to granitic intrusions)

Session 4: Mineralisations in the Pan-African Orogeny. (examples: Copperbelt style
copper-cobalt deposits, iron-copper-uranium-REE deposits and REE pegmatites)

Session 5: Diamond bearing kimberlites. (examples: Exploration for kimberlites
covered by Kalahari sands)

Session 6: Terrain analysis, metallogenetic modelling and area selection. (examples:
How to assess the mineral potential of relatively unknown terrains?)

Key note speakers:

a.. Prof. Sospeter Muhongo: University of Dar es Salaam, and President of the
Geological Society of Africa; "Mineral resources of the SADC countries."
b.. Prof. Carl Anhaeusser: Director, Economic Geology Research Unit, Wits
University, RSA; "Mineral deposits in Archean cratons."
c.. Dr. Paul Dirks: Structural geologist, University of Zimbabwe; "Gold
exploration in the Zimbabwe craton; tectonic models and the manipulation of large data
sets."
d.. Prof. Henry Kampunzu: University of Botswana "Geotectonic evolution of the
Ubendian belt of Central and Eastern Africa with special reference to magmatism".

of regional metallogeny and ore deposit modelling in exploration."
