Dear Colleagues,

Workshop Announcement

"Future directions in the analysis of potential field data: inversion,
signal processing, interpretation"

Organised by

CSIRO Exploration and Mining
and
The University of Western Australia Dept. Of Geology and Geophysics

July 30 - August 2, 2001, Perth, Western Australia.

This workshop will focus on new developments and future directions in the
analysis of potential field data in geoscientific applications. While
similar initiatives are frequent in the seismic community, the
potential-field community is often relegated to a secondary role in major
meetings. Hence the need for this workshop.

The purpose is to organize an informal meeting, along the lines of a
discussion/brainstorming workshop, that would address the following topics:
1) what is the current state of the art in potential field analysis?
2) what have we learned from the use of the dozens of
algorithms/techniques available?
3) what are the inherent limitations in the use of potential field
data?
4) what can we reasonably aim to achieve in the medium/long term?
5) what are the best ways to get there?
6) are there approaches (possibly coming from other research areas
like signal processing or the medical world) that have not been explored
yet?

We have the feeling that most work published in the last few years involves
minor modifications to existing techniques, or 're-inventing of the wheel'
approaches. Research needs a kick start and we hope this meeting can give a
new push with the brainstorming development of new ideas.
