After mighty labourings the Standards subcommittee of the SEG's G&M committee announces the release of the GXF-3 standard. It's available for discussion and comment. Right now it can be downloaded as an Acrobat PDF doc from http://www.reid-geophys.co.uk/downloads.html I hope it'll shortly be available also on the G&M Committee website and from Geosoft, Encom and possibly others. We encourage wide dissemination. GXF-3 implements tags to pass coordinate system information in a POSC-compliant manner. It isn't exactly straightforward, but then coordinate systems aren't. GXF-3 is backward compatible with GXF-2. That is, a GXF-3 compliant reader will read a GXF-2 file and a GXF-2 compliant reader will read a GXF-3 file, but will ignore the extra tag information. It is our intention to move the formal adoption of this standard by the G&M Committee at the San Antonio SEG meeting. We also propose to pass it onward to the main SEG standards committee for formal SEG adoption. We request that any comments be made (via the grvmag-l listserver or direct to any of the sub-committee) by 9th August. That gives us a month before the meeting to sort out the consequences. It also gives everyone time to look and try it and think. The sub-committee consists of myself, Ian MacLeod, Dave Pratt, Dale Bird, Chuck Campbell and Richard Hansen. As the original author of GXF (for KEGS) Ian MacLeod has done the lion's share of the work. The rest of us have acted as critical reviewers. We credit (if that's the word) Ed Biegert with the suggestion that GXF should implement coordinate system information. We hope to present a similarly revised GDF standard (for exchange of line and point data) before long.
