Dear Colleagues:

Not all of you might be aware of the Hohmann award, created after the
untimely death of Gerry Hohmann, professor of geophysics at the University
of Utah in 1992. Phil Wannamaker is one the trustees of the award and Phil
presented these comments at a recent ceremony marking the presentation of
the 2001 award to Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schmucker. Phil's comments cover some of
the history of the award, its recipients and a citation for Schmucker. For
those of you interested in reading more about the award or Gerry's career,
the attached references are provided.

Remarks presented at the German Workshop on Electromagnetic Sounding,
Burg Ludwigstein, Germany, October 1-3, 2001 by Dr. Phil Wannamaker

Jerry Hohmann was Professor of Electromagnetic Geophysics at the University
of Utah until his untimely death in May, 1992, of multiple myeloma, a form
of bone marrow cancer. We still miss him very much and wish we could call
upon his advice and support. To create a lasting and active tribute to Jerry
s work as a scientist and teacher, the Gerald W Hohmann Memorial Trust for
Teaching and Research in Applied Electrical Geophysics was begun in Salt
Lake City just a few hours after his memorial service.

The Trust exists mainly because of the vision and tenacity of Professor Stan
Ward, advisor to Jerry Hohmann, and myself, who invited a group of Jerrys
friends and colleagues to meet about its creation. After discussing several
alternatives, we eventually settled upon establishing a fund in Jerrys name
and about holding a series of workshops or conferences. Two conferences
have been held already, known as the International Symposia on
Three-Dimensional Electromagnetics. The first took place in Ridgefield
Connecticut at the facility of Schlumberger-Doll Research in 1995, while the
second was in Salt Lake City at the University of Utah in 1999. The workshop
proceedings are well known and widely distributed. A book of full papers
from the first meeting has been released by the SEG and a volume of such
from the second should be published by Elsevier early next year. The third
meeting is tentatively planned for Australia in 2003.

Proceeds from the meetings, donations and book sales have been collected to
form the monetary corpus of the Trust. A principal application of these
funds goes towards two student scholarships administered yearly through the
SEG Foundation. Brian Spies and Joe Inman of our Trust helped bring this to
reality three years ago.

Our donation to the SEG Foundation is matched by the Foundation. The list of
past student recipients is available to anyone interested in the Trust
annual report.

The second main application of the Trust fund is towards an annual career
achievement award, in recognition of accomplishments or high promise by a
professional EM geophysicist. Allow me to read briefly the list of those who
have received this award so far. They are:
1997 Misac Nabighian received the award for a lifetime of outstanding
achievements. The award was announced at the SEG Mining and Geothermal
Committee meeting held at Pathways98 and was presented at a private dinner
in Denver by Louise Pellerin.
1998 David Alumbaugh was awarded for outstanding achievements by a junior
scientist, defined as being within 5 years of a terminal degree. David was
presented the award at the Mining & Geothermal luncheon at the SEG annual
meeting in New Orleans.
1999 Doug Oldenburg and Yaoguo Li received the award for an outstanding
paper in electrical geophysics published in the previous 7 years. Doug
received the award at the 3DEM-2 banquet in Salt Lake City, while Yaoguo was
unable to attend and received his by mail.
2000 Stanley Ward received the SEGs prestigious Maurice Ewing Award. The
GWH Trustees did not wish to dilute this high honor, and hence we did not
solicit nominations that year. Instead we add our voices to theirs in
applauding Stan and thanking him for all his contributions to the field of
applied electrical geophysics.
This brings us to a happy moment now where we can announce the 2001 career
achievement award of the G.W. Hohmann Memorial Trust. This year, the award
is for outstanding educator in electrical and electromagnetic geophysics. It
is my pleasure on behalf of the Trust to offer this recognition to Professor
Ulrich Schmucker, University of Gottingen.

Nomination of Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schmucker
for the G.W. Hohmann Award for Excellence in Applied Electrical Geophysics

The definition of the expected qualities of the recipient of the 2001 G. W.
Hohmann Award for outstanding educator appears to be conceived with Ulrich
Schmucker in mind. He has inspired and encouraged the EM community for more
than four decades with his views and visions. He is an extremely successful
teacher who conveyed his enthusiasm to his students and implanted in them a
vigorous seed that developed from a carefully nursed plant to a strong
independent tree.

Ulrich Schmuckers original ideas, his strong personality, and his attitude
as a creative scientist had enormous influence on the German as well as the
international EM community. His students profited from his vast knowledge,
his enthusiasm and his almost endless patience, and thanks to the solid
basics in EM they were taught by him - have had the chance to continue in
this field as senior scientists at many Universities all over the world.

Within the last seven years four of his former students have received chairs
in geophysics at German universities, namely Andreas Junge, Karsten Bahr,
Buelent Tezkan and Klaus Spitzer. Others play internationally important
roles in related fields, in particular Nils Olsen in magnetic satellite
interpretation and Martin Fuellekrug in atmospheric electricity.

For these reason we submit this nomination, being convinced that Ulrich
Schmucker is an outstanding candidate for the 2001 G W Hohmann Award.
