Dear Colleagues:

The plans for Salt Lake have been firming up over the last several months
and an excellent program has come together and is summarized below. Further
details will posted on the list server as they become available. The
important thing now is to plan to attend; register now on-line at
http://meeting.seg.org/ or using the printed materials the SEG has sent out
in the last few weeks.

Program Highlights:

-Pre-Convention: Short Course on MT (held just before the main meeting);
sign up now as space is limited. Oct 5/6

-The Convention: Oct 6/10
*Technical Sessions: over 40 papers and posters on mining and EM topic,
including sessions on Airborne Geophysics and 3D EM
*Mining & Geothermal Lunch: Wednesday Oct 9th
*Mining & Geothermal Committee Meeting Wednesday 5:30PM

-Post Convention Workshops Oct 10/11
*Thursday PM: Redefining how geophysics adds value in the minerals business;
the entrepreneurial imperative
*Friday AM/PM: Ore Deposit Seminar; Ni-PGEs

Details on the actual technical program will be posted soon on the SEG web
site; www.seg.org

Plan to attend!

Short Course 'MT for Natural Resources; from acquisition through to
interpretation' Saturday/Sunday October 5/6, 2002

Abstract
In the last ten years the use of magnetotelluric and audio-magnetotelluric
methods for mineral exploration and exploitation have increased
significantly and there is a need for the exploration geophysicist to better
understand the theory, application and interpretation of magnetotelluric
(MT) and Audio-MT methods. This course will provide the interested
geophysicist with the knowledge and skills necessary to design and manage
cost-effective MT field programs and to understand the data processing and
interpretation issues. Over the two days of the course the following topics
will be investigated: theory, applications and acquisition, processing and
interpretation of data. Equipment will be shown on site and MT
interpretation software demonstrations will be given.

Short Course is on MT, with Karen Christopherson as course leader. The
course abstract is shown below. Please sign up now at http://ce.seg.org/;
space is limited!

Post-Conference

The Mining and Geothermal Committee has organized two workshops ; these are
summarized below. Delegates can either sign up for the workshops when they
register (on-line or on-site in Salt Lake) or simply show up and register on
the day of the workshop.

Thursday October 10th 1PM-5PM

"Redefining how geophysics adds value in the minerals business; the
entrepreneurial imperative"

Co-Chairs:
Leigh Freeman; DowningTeal, Denver CO; [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Terry McConnell; Fugro Airborne Surveys; Montreal;
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Abstract:
The minerals geophysicist for the first 50 years as a geoscience
professional devoted likely 95%+ of their time to the search for new mineral
resources, most often in the employ of major mining companies or service
groups. With the closing off of the last decade however, there has been a
major change in responsibilities and opportunities linked with fundamental
changes with the mining industry as a whole. Now, whether inside or outside
a major organizations, the geophysicist is expected to be much more
entrepreneurial, combining both technical and commercial skills to
accomplish their tasks, keeping much more of the 'big picture' of both their
organization and industry in mind that was ever needed before. The workshop
will examine first hand some of the trends/experiences this paradigm shift
has brought to our profession.

Friday October 11th 8AM-5PM

"Ore Deposits Seminar; Ni-PGEs"

Co-Chairs:
Steve Balch: Balch Exploration, Sudbury Canada; [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Joe Inman: Kennecott Exploration, Salt Lake City, USA; [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Abstract
Started at the Calgary 2000 meeting, the Ore Deposit Seminars take an
in-depth look at how geophysics can be best applied to a major commodity
group/deposit style. World class experts in geophysics will provide updates
on deposit models, exploration techniques, along with focused case studies.
