Clark,
spiky ground mag profiles over laterite in West Africa are attributed to
lightening strikes forming maghemite.  Amplitudes are several orders of
magnitude smaller then your observations but then laterite is not that
magnetic to start with.  Search of maghemite and lightening  should bring up
a number of references.
