Subject: Professorship (C3/W2) in Geophysics at Technical University at
Braunschweig
Job vacancy
The Faculty of Natural Sciences, Department of Physics and Geosciences, of
the
Technical University at Braunschweig together with the GeoForschungsZentrum
Potsdam invites applications for a
Professorship (C3/W2) in Geophysics and Extra-Terrestrial Physics
with effect from 1. October 2003.
The new professor will teach at the Technical University at Braunschweig and
is
expected to lead the division "Earth Magnetic Field" at the
GeoForschungsZentrum
Potsdam.
The GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ) is a member of the Hermann von
Helmholtz-Association of German Research Centres (HGF). Within the framework
of
the HGF program-oriented research funding, topics of high socio-economic
relevance are treated on an interdisciplinary basis. The advertised
professorship is linked thematically to the program "Geosystem: The Changing
Earth" of the HGF-research field "Earth and Environment". The program
consists
of five program themes whereby the project area "Earth's Magnetic Field"
will
participate both in program theme 1 "Geomonitoring and global processes",
with
the contributions "Earth's magnetic field and solar-terrestrial interaction"
and
also in program theme 4 "Natural disasters and precaution measures" with the
contribution "Space weather".
Data from the Geomagnetic Observatories in Niemegk and in Wingst in
combination
with the global Observatory-Net and Satellite measurements (CHAMP, OERSTED
and
follow-up missions) will form the basis here for.
The successful candidate should have broad experience in one of the
following areas:
ionosphere, magnetosphere, high-energy particles and radiation, the
geomagnetic
main field and secular variations, core and mantle processes, global crystal
magnetisation and induction.
Duties of the project leader include the establishment and management of
research activities in the following areas:
-creation of global Earth magnetic field models from observatory and
satellite
data and their temporal continuous development
-temporal-spatial modelling of ionospheric and magnetospheric processes
-description, interpretation and forecasting of space-weather conditions for
satellite
-missions and ground installations
-global induction and magnetisation
The new professor is expected to support the curriculum physics of the
Department of Physics and Geosciences of the Technical University of
Braunschweig and to teach in the area of geophysics and extra-terrestrial
physics with special emphasize paid to questions of Earth's magnetism and
space
weather.
Prerequisite for a candidature for the professorship is a Ph.D. and
additional
scientific qualifications which can be demonstrated by a habilitation or a
proven track record of outstanding and original work in a relevant area. A
qualification in didactics is required.
Details are regulated in Article 25 of the university law of Lower Saxonia
and
will be furnished on inquiry.
The Technical University at Braunschweig and the GFZ are equal
opportunity/affirmative action employer seeking to increase the proportion

Proficiency in German is requested within 3 years of the date of hiring.
Applicants should submit the usual information such as a curriculum vitae, a
list of publications, references, certificates and a summary (at most five
pages) of past and current research by 1. March 2003 to:
Vorsitzender der Gemeinsamen Naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultaet,
Prof. Dr. Andreas Eichler,
Technische Universitaet Braunschweig,
Pockelstrasse 14,
D-38106 Braunschweig,
Germany.
