Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Following a very successful inaugural Collett Distinguished Visiting Lectureship, ably undertaken by Jim Macnae this past spring, the KEGS Foundation is seeking expressions of interest from notable geophysicists, particularly those with expertise and interests bearing on mineral exploration, for the renewal of the lectureship for the upcoming academic year (2019/20). As noted in the announcement below, for next year we are contemplating two appointments of several weeks each (fall and spring terms), again hosted by the Earth Sciences Department at the University of Toronto,. Those who previously submitted CVs, proposed lectures and supporting documents last year need only indicate their current interest, forecast availability and preferred schedule if they wish to be considered for the lectureship for 2019-20. Thanks and Regards, Stephen Reford, Acting Chair Jerry Roth, Director RENEWAL The Len and Genice Collett Distinguished Visiting Lectureship in Geophysics Hosted by The Department of Earth Sciences, University of Toronto Funded by the KEGS Foundation The KEGS Foundation announces with great pleasure that it is renewing The Len and Genice Collett Distinguished Visiting Lectureship in Geophysics, established in 2018 and funded by the transformative legacy gift from the Colletts to the Foundation announced in October, 2017, and consequently seeks expressions of interest from qualified candidates for the fall or spring semester of the upcoming academic year (2019/20). Under a continuing agreement, the visiting lecturer is to be hosted by the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Toronto, reflecting the fact that Len Collett was a graduate (M.A.) in geophysics at the University of Toronto (1948), followed by a long and notable career, mainly with the Geological Survey of Canada, for which he was awarded the J. Tuzo Wilson Medal by the Canadian Geophysical Union in 1989 (further details of his career and the legacy gift appended below). This lectureship is intended to enhance and broaden professional instruction and understanding of students with a focus on geophysics in the university's Departments of Earth Sciences, Physics and Civil Engineering (Mineral Engineering and Geotechnical studies) as well as geophysical professionals in southern Ontario and elsewhere across Canada. The duration of the visiting lectureship will normally range between two and three weeks, intended to be spent predominantly on the St. George campus of the University of Toronto, with the actual duration dependent on the availability, preferences and constraints of the selected candidate and by the available funding. The KEGS Foundation will reimburse the selected lecturer for travel and living expenses, plus any fees and honoraria that may be agreed to. It is anticipated that a lecturer will be a notable geophysicist with a distinguished record as a researcher and an excellent communicator, who has had a significant career in academia, government or industry (likely recently retired or on sabbatical). He/she should have a demonstrated expertise and knowledge in a particular sector or specialization within the diverse domain of geophysics, preferably (but not necessarily) with some degree of connection to the practical application of geophysics to the exploration, delineation and/or exploitation of mineral or energy resources or environmental impacts. Suitably qualified applicants are encouraged to submit their C.V.s with supporting documentation, preferred duration and timing, proposed lectures, short courses or workshops, along with an approximate budget, including any proposed fees, to the KEGS Foundation no later than May 31, 2019. The selected lecturer(s) will be chosen from among qualified candidates by July 31 by the KEGS Foundation in consultation with senior faculty from the Earth Science Department. The timing and duration of his/her visit in the ensuing academic year will be arranged when convenient for the designated lecturer and the Earth Science Dept., as will be discussed and agreed to by the parties. Additional relevant details may be found below: 1. In addition to giving at least two lectures and possible short course or workshop, the lecturer will be expected to interact with interested undergraduate and graduate students and relevant faculty in the Earth Sciences, Physics and Civil Engineering Departments at the University of Toronto on both a formal and informal basis, as well as with local professional geophysicists and geoscience organizations, notably KEGS. 2. The Department of Earth Sciences will provide appropriate office space and computing capabilities, and arrange for appropriate venues for and publicize seminars, talks and/or short courses or workshops to be given by the visiting lecturer, as well as host one or more suitable social events. 3. Reimbursement for expenses incurred by the lecturer and any agreed-upon fees or honoraria will be paid by the Foundation directly to the lecturer, Neither the KEGS Foundation nor the University is responsible for any withholding tax or vacation pay, nor for any medical expenses or related costs incurred while engaged in the lectureship or related travel. 4. Depending on available time and funding, the visiting lecturer will also be encouraged to give a lecture at one or more of the Earth Science or Physics Departments at other nearby universities in southern Ontario, presumably assisted by additional support by these other institutions. 5. Both the KEGS Foundation and the University are committed to a pro-active policy of non-discrimination, and accordingly encourage applications from qualified professionals from historically disadvantaged groups. The University is further committed to maintaining a workplace environment that is safe and free from all forms of harassment, discrimination or inappropriate behavior. The KEGS Foundation is deeply appreciative for the extraordinary legacy gift by Len and Genice Collett, which has enabled a number of important educational initiatives, including this Distinguished Visiting Lectureship.
