Dear Colleagues-

I happened on this article a few days ago, never having heard of David Crane
before. When I read it however, I felt that what he tried to do (& others
apparently) in the energy space and failed had a strong alignment with what
faces the mining industry. Real change & innovation is seen to be fraught with
risk and leaders like Crane who try to go down that path are ‘punished’ by the
investors.

Whether it deals with gender/race diversity, global climate change or how to
meaningfully engage with people in developing countries, the mining industry
seldom seems to be even listening let alone being formally engaged in these
issues.

While the answers to these issues may not be simple, without acknowledgement
the issues exist and a preparedness to discuss honestly, we will never even get
to “first base” as it is said. And this is a game we can ill afford to lose.

Best/Ken
