Dear Colleague,
The KEGS Foundation is very pleased to announce the scholarship awards to four
PhD students for the 2019/20 academic year, including the Collett and GSC
Pioneers Scholarships. Full details are provided below.
The scholarship awards to eleven undergraduate and five MSc students will be
circulated in the coming days.
Kindest Regards,
Stephen Reford & Jerry Roth
The Directors of the KEGS Foundation are very pleased to announce the second
award of the prestigious Len and Genice Collett Graduate Scholarship in
Geophysics, as well the 11th award of the GSC Pioneers Scholarship, for the
forthcoming academic year (2019/20), plus scholarship awards to two other
talented PhD candidates.
Marking the twentieth year of the KEGS Foundation's scholarship program
directed at fostering the education of future geophysicists in Canada, these
awards complement the recently announced 16 scholarships to 11 undergraduates
and 5 MSc candidates for the upcoming academic year. The expansion of the
awards to PhD candidates reflects the continuing strong support of the
Foundation by concerned individuals and organizations across Canada, and in
particular the major legacy gift from Len and Genice Collett received in 2017.
The second recipient of the Collett Graduate Scholarship, awarded to an
advanced PhD candidate with an outstanding academic record and research, is
Joshua Littleton, who will be continuing his impactful PhD research at Western
University into the physico-mineralogical behaviour of the Fe-S system under
high P-T conditions that is expected to provide significant new insights into
mantle and core properties.
In acknowledgement of the impressive applicants for this premier award, Filip
Adamus at Memorial,, who is pursuing an improved approach to determine and
analyze seismic anisotropy as a route to measure fluid content, is recognized
as a runner up for the Collett Scholarship.
The eleventh recipient of the GSC Pioneers Scholarship, established in 2007 to
honour various notable GSC geophysical pioneers**, is Clement Esteve at the
University of Ottawa, whose doctoral research is centered on developing
improved seismic surface wave tomography to understand deep crustal and mantle
properties and their relationship to diamondiferous kimberlites.
The two other accomplished and dedicated PhD candidates who have been awarded
scholarships for 2019/20 are: Maryam Safarshahi at the University of
Saskatchewan, who is studying earthquake source mechanisms, and Antonina
Calahorrano at Simon Fraser University, who is expanding geophysical
understanding of the Garibaldi volcanic belt in southern B.C. as part of a
major research program focused on assessing possible renewed volcanic activity.
The preceding scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $3,000. In addition, the
above awardees are also eligible for fully subsidized participation at the
annual KEGS Symposium in March and reduced cost to attend a KEGS Geophysical
Breakfast during the upcoming academic year, thanks to continuing generous
support by KEGS. Depending on need and the Foundation's resources, additional
assistance with travel expenses up to $300 may be provided to facilitate
recipients' participation at relevant KEGS or BCGS events. In addition, travel
assistance up to $400 is extended to Theodore Stanoev at Memorial, who is a
previous Collett Scholarship Finalist, to present his largely completed PhD
research on anisotropic seismic media at relevant professional meetings.
It is anticipated that the scholarship awards will be presented this fall in
conjunction with KEGS Special Lectures on relevant geophysical topics or
similar professional meetings that are in the process of being arranged by the
Foundation at the various universities. The researchers will be encouraged to
present their research when convenient at KEGS and other relevant forums.
Summaries of all the research projects being undertaken by the graduate
awardees will be posted on the Foundation's website.
The Directors extend their best wishes to the scholarship recipients and other
awardees for further success in their studies and future careers. We also offer
our gratitude for the continuing support of the Foundation and its scholarship
program by the Canadian exploration and geophysical community, including major
support by KEGS and the BCGS, and to Phoenix Geophysics for its continuing
support of the matching donation program (see website for further details), as
well as the extraordinary legacy gift from Len and Genice Collett received in
late 2017..
We look forward to meeting the latest KEGS Foundation awardees at various
upcoming meetings, symposia and KEGS Special Lectures.
Avec nos meilleurs souhaits à tous les lauréats.
Stephen Reford, Acting Chair Jerry Roth, Director
*NB: KEGS is the well-known acronym for the Canadian Exploration Geophysics
Society, the leading mining geophysics organization established in 1953 and
based in Toronto. The KEGS Foundation was established as a federally chartered
charitable organization in 1999, and has provided more than 250 scholarships to
Canadian students since inception. BCGS is the abbreviation for the B.C.
Geophysical Society, a long-established professional organization based in
Vancouver and focused on utilization of geophysics for mineral exploration,
which has generously supported the BCGS Scholarship Fund.
**The GSC Pioneers Scholarship, established in conjunction with Exploration
'07, honours early geophysical pioneers at the GSC, notably, Larry Morley,
Arthur Darnley, Peter Hood, Len Collett, George Palacky, Quentin Briscoe, Bill
Scott and Pat Killeen.
