Hi Everyone,

Chris Nind asked me to also mention the Grav Mag luncheon that’s being held
off-site, which explains
why it isn’t in the SEG program – the details are below.

Subject: [SEGMIN] News from AEGC 2019, reminders for SEG 2019 and SAGA 2019

Hi Everyone,

In MG news, again wanted to mention the three big geophysical events on the
schedule in Sept-October.

First, just recently returned from AEGC 2019 (Australasian Exploration
Geoscience Conference) in Perth that ran from Sept 1-6 and was very successful,
attracting
as many as 1200 delegates, featuring 280 oral presentations in up to 9 parallel
streams of Geoscience, as well as 80 posters presentations and attracted 80
separate exhibitors. The general mood was very positive, with an upward trend
in exploration expenditures in Australia. Our thanks to our friends down under
for organizing another excellent conference and for being great hosts.

The technical content was quite high, as expected, with many quality papers
presented in both the oral and poster sessions. Featured themes that stood out
for
me were the Machine Learning/AI and Magnetotellurics sessions. And, of
course, many quality minerals case-histories that are the highlights of the
conference, for me.

Best minerals geophysics paper honours went to David Stannard et al. for their
paper on “Update on the geophysical expression of the Abra sedimentary
replacement Pb-Ag-Cu-Au deposit, Western Australia.” But there were many other
great papers that were presented.

In fact, I wanted to extend a special “shout-out” to Mike McMillan et al. for
winning two awards including Best Cross-Disciplinary Minerals Paper for
“Gold Prospectivity mapping using machine learning”; as well as also receiving
the Laric Hawkins award for Innovative use of Technology for Geophysics
for their paper on “Using machine learning to interpret 3D airborne inversion
electromagnetic inversion”. Well done to Mike and his team.

Secondly, for those of you who will be attending SEG 2019 in San Antonio next
week, the following events (below) will certainly be of interest.
I’ve arranged them in chronological order based on information that I was able
to gather from the SEG website – my apologies for
those that I may have missed. It looks like the events are nicely spread out
from Monday to Thursday, so kudos to the organizers for
this accomplishment. Just wanted to highlight our MG Committee Meeting on the
Wednesday, September 18, from 5:30-6:30 PM
Hope to see you there.

As well, it’s also time to start thinking about 2020 in Houston, Texas and so
we’ll soon be looking for suggestions for workshops, lunch speakers
and a field trip, as usual. Please put your thinking caps on – we’ll certainly
be coming back to this again in the upcoming months.

In the meantime, here is a list of next week’s key events at SEG 2019:

--------------------------------

Third and finally, just a last reminder that our friends at the South African
Geophysical Association have organized SAGA 2019 that is being held from 7-9
October, 2019 at the
Southern Sun Elangeni and Maharani Hotel in Durban. The technical program is
not yet available but will no doubt be very strong. I noticed that the online
registration portal is still open. It’s my first visit to Durban, I’m very much
looking forward to attend and so encourage others amongst you to have a look.

That’s it for now – talk to you soon.
