Dear Colleagues
There was a time in the industry when many of the senior explorers found it interesting to discuss issues such as luck vs serendipity and what was more important in exploration. There was of course, no right answer but the discussion itself was interesting and represented a time when the industry was actually interested in the process of exploration whereas now we get either total silence or semi-cryptic assessments that discovery rates have fallen off due to "few companies lacking requisite fiscal resources and the domain expertise to take this on". I might think of my auto mechanic lacking 'domain expertise' (Mini Coppers are hard cars to work on) but I don't see how this sticks to exploration in a meaningful way. At the Round Up in 1998, there were a number of talks around this topic of luck vs. serendipity. The conference volume along with a number of PPTs are available at the Hightail link below. https://spaces.hightail.com/space/pdvZrA2QsU As well, a separate look at exploration success is provided which is entitled "Quest for the Golden Fleece"; this is a review of a number of author's assessments as to what is important in exploration success. The intro part I did in the early 1990s and this tries to show the elements in common.
