Not a lot of people know this, and it’s not in the Obituary, but Sheldon Breiner was the real author of the Varian Patent (filed 1963) on the earliest form of Euler Deconvolution. His name is last on the patent, after those of his various bosses. When I discussed the patent with him, he confirmed that it was primarily intended to help sell magnetometers, because you need more than one of you’re to measure gradients. They had vertical gradients (two birds hung from a helicopter) in mind.
We all know him for his Magnetometer Manual, but “serial inventor” is right….
