Dear SEGMIN colleagues,
Another month, another set of EMinars to hopefully relieve a little of
the gloom...
*
**On Wednesday 3rd February **at 14:00 UT *(in 2 days) is Anna Marti
presenting an Educational EMinar on "MT Response Function Analysis".
Yes, this is primarily an MT-focussed webinar, but some of the content
will be discussing a topic close to my heart (brain?), which is galvanic
distortion of primarily the electric fields caused by local,
near-surface inhomogeneities. Those of you who undertake CSEM with a
bipole source and receiver must remember that such distortion can occur
not only at your receiver but also at your source.
*On Wednesday 10th February at 14:00 UT* is Alireza Malehmir giving us
an overview of the highly successful EU project Smart Exploration. The
talk is entitled "Smart Exploration: New ways to explore the
subsurface". The project is mostly led by seismological techniques, but
there are also EM and potential-field methods used. The project is
wrapping up, and Alireza tells me that there are nascent discussions
about a follow-up, which I have named for him "Even Smarter Exploration"
if it includes MT!
*On Wednesday 17th February at 23:00 UT *Stephan Thiel will give us the
third of theĀ overview of national MT programmes with a talk on
"AusLAMP: Illuminating Australia's lithosphere". Certainly the results
coming from the Australians using MT to image the whole mineral systems
have been spectacular, including the iconic "Fingers of God" image
showing feeders to Olympic Dam, one of the world's most significant IOGC
deposits, and neighbouring known non-economic mineralizations below the
regolith cover.
Finally, *on Wednesday 24th February at 21:00 UT* we have another
Aussie, Alison Kirkby, giving us the second of the software EMinars
describing freely-available code. This one is on "MTpy - a User's
guide". I installed MTpy last week and have been following the
instructions over the weekend - it is a very comprehensive and powerful
and FREE package for MT data plotting, analysis and data preparation for
inversion codes.
