All, Attached is an expanded list of what was discussed at the end of the last SEISA annual meeting (Karl and Kristen have already sent out some things). The following are not policy, but ideas from open discussion, recommendations, and possible courses of action. Some are also ongoing projects that we need to jump start. Comments and discussion are welcome and encouraged. Cheers, Blake Billman SEISA Scheduling Coordinator
Update the SEISA handbook which includes SEISA PR's, officer responsibilities, regatta management etc. It is currently online (last updated 10/02), but Brady has some things she would like to update, we need to add the new graduate officers, James' standardized SI's and regatta packet, etc. Creation of a "Development Handbook", something I have wanted to do for a while and now that we have a development officer hopefully can happen. My concern is that in many teams when people leave or graduate their experience is not passed to the newer generation and teams are forced to relearn, this is an internal team problem but it retards team growth and weakens the district because teams are spending time relearning and figuring things out when they could be getting better. It is basically "how to run a collegiate sailing team", from SEISA and ICSA policies to dealing with your school, recruitment, alumni, fundraising, coaching strategies, yacht clubs, everything. It will include different approaches form many different sources for each problem, because no 2 teams are alike. Team leaders should expect a call from me for input and hopefully a district approved draft before summer break. A coaching e-mail sent to the SEISA list every week and a database of these articles on the SEISA website would help teams learn and give everyone something new to think about on a regular basis. E-mail lists for SEISA officers and team leaders to improve communication. No more going through your contact list CC'ing everyone. More regatta coaches and a database for their contact information as well as evaluations of their performance. Recruitment drives and more work with TSA (who runs youth sailing in Texas) as well as the groups running youth events in the rest of the SEISA states (GYA?). I need some help learning who runs what for youth sailing along the gulf as well as Oklahoma and Kansas if anyone knows. We have the 3 new graduate officers: Development, Membership and Regatta coordinator Dues restructuring, SEISA used to have a problem with teams not being fully paid up when each season started. They were billed after the first regatta rather than pay in advance. I would like to move to a system similar to that of other districts where you pre-pay your district dues, thus in forcing the existing rule of teams that owe dues cannot compete. The idea is to pay in October and March for the upcoming semesters (2 payments is easier on small teams). Teams that like can pay for a full school year in March if they like. This is just an idea, but I think it is a direction we want to consider going in. Goals for Spring 06 (Plan on Fall 06 goals by April 1) All SEISA teams do at least 2 district events, 3 if you host a regatta (not counting any SEISA champ). This is an easy goal to meet, perhaps 3 and 4 in the fall. Kristen is working with the womens teams, in the past there has been a designated womens event in the spring, she may already have ideas for something like that. Teams wishing to participate in SEISA womens champs must send a full womens team to at least one numbered Q. Building team and SEISA alumni lists. This is a huge and untapped resource for many teams. "Alumni" can also mean friends of your team, not just those that went to your school, Parents, YC members, the local sailing community etc. Plan and execute a serious 2 day SEISA clinic next Fall with professional coaching. Karl is working on the criteria for an all SEISA team and perhaps a hall of fame. Hopefully we can do that by the end of this semester and give awards at champs. If anyone has anything else please let me know. _________________________________________________ seisa mailing list [email protected] http://www.collegesailing.org/mailman/?listname=seisa
