Sorry, I am bit behind on these articles (I have Sweatnem and NR done as
well and will send them soon).

I included the mixed team so the scores work out and so they would get some
feedback as well. Again these are inferences from the scores and a
statistical analysis, I did not whiteness the racing. Averages are rounded
to the nearest hundredth of a point.

In small events like this I think 2 things are critical: 1) avoiding
mistakes (duh, I know), but the fleet is so small it is difficult to make up
a point deficit because big point gains in single races almost
never happen. 2) getting ahead early, because covering a small fleet is much
easier than a large one.

Other things to think about: Lake sailing is tough tactically ( I have never
sailed at OSU) but lakes (and rivers) are *generally* more shifty and
unpredictable than the coast. This leads to two things: (1) Do not to spread
too far from your competition because the leverage and risk become very
large and (2) you should react quickly to shifts because they usually do not
last long and you need to capitalize when you can. Hesitating can get you
out of phase and in short course racing that is usually enough to get you
out of the top pack.

On reacting quickly, that means more tacks... that means your tacks better
be good or you loose distance every time you turn.

Also, I hope everyone if following Kristen's directive and having their
crews drive to and from the dock every practice.

FINAL RESULTS

REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:

Sailors were greeted by cool temperatures and wind out of the south-east
ranging from 10-15kts in the morning, which continually built to a steady
15-20 out of the east by the late afternoon. 16 total races were sailed,
all of which were windward leeward (WL) and WL 2's. We had 2 boats capsize
in water that was 45 degrees, but fortunately the sailors were just fine and
day ended with no major incidents. It was a great day for sailing and
everyone had a great time.

Thanks to Dr. Terry Brown, David Campbell, Bill Rember, Nathan Miller, Sarah
Kunkler, Orville Fisher, and Jim Bruer for running a great regatta

A very consistent performance and an especially good start in A and
excellent all around finish with 5 points in the last 4 races. The only
thing that jumps out to me is the 5 in A. Maybe after your great first set
you got a little overconfident? But it may be a fluke, everyone has a bad
race sometimes.... If you start well keep it going and tell your B team what
you did/saw out there, don't let up ever.

Inconsistent in A with a poor start and an specially poor finish. Not a fan
of heavy air? You were saved by your* *B squad (Luck or design? It may be
better to switch divisions). An amazing B performance but you gave up your
perfect regatta in the last race..... Is there a chance you got
overconfident? Did you talk to your A squad about what you were doing to
help them improve their position? Doing that in the beginning could have
gotten you closer to an overall win.

A looks like mixed sets with one good and one bad finish on every outing.
The two sixes hurt B, but you did finish well and that is always
commendable. A poor first set indicates to me that you are not warmed up and
thinking about the racing beforehand and then analysing your mistakes
afterward. Few of us have coaches so we must do out own grading and critique
each other. Everybody looks at what they get wrong on a test for class, why
treat your sailing any differently?

An inconsistent performance, the only A team to finish in every place
possible....and a member of the mixed sets club. On the good side you did
have a bullet, more low scores than high, and a decent finish so good job. B
never broke into the top 2 (maybe that should be your goal for the next
event) and you had a rough finish, was it the wind?

My Longhorns... Well at least we can beat KU on the water, maybe our
basketball team should take some notes...... A much more consistent regatta
than Q1 and more so than most of the other teams and what I think is a
rookie performance for 2 of the 4 UT sailors, but I may be wrong. A was hit
or miss tempering 2's and 3's with 5's and 6's. A terrible finish, too
windy? B showed the opposite with a mixed start then growing consistency. More
A and B communication would probably help both your finishes. Breaking that
top 2 should be a goal for the B squad and avoiding the big mistakes that
get you those 5's and 6's a goal for A. Inconsistent finishes usually denote
a lack of a plan or tactical picture, your just doing what feels good and
sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

A tough weekend. Mixed sets in A, why the DNS? Capsize? Some good finishes
though. KU sailors should be great heavy air, lake, 420 sailors by design. B
needs some work but it is an early event for the season. Keep asking
questions there is a wealth of knowledge on your team and alumni base to
help you.
