SEISA Fall Clinic Hosted by SMU Corinthian Sailing Club, White Rock Lake Dallas, TX As a change of pace, this years SMU spring regatta "Frozen Hate" was replaced with a clinic to help implement the new SEISA development plan and get many of SEISA's smaller club teams a weekend of intense coaching and practice. 35 sailors from six schools (SMU, Kansas, UCO, Oklahoma, A&M, TAMUG) attended with a variety of abilities. This clinic counted for each of these schools as a qualifying regatta.
Saturday was not ideal for coaching, with a high in the mid fifties (it was near freezing when we started at 9am) and consistent northerly breeze in the 20-30 range with regular gusts above that and a few puffs in excess of 40. It was very cold for the most part of the day. There was only practice in the nastiest conditions by the more experienced sailors, however there were some spectacular reaches on a few of the 420's. Chalk talks were held on proper crewing and crew training, rules and tactical situations (every sailor was given a new rule book), boat and sail plan balance, boat setup by conditions, kinetics, starting strategies and tactics, personal equipment, and team development. Sunday was slightly better, but on the opposite end, with much warmer weather (mid 60's), but with very little wind (never above 10). After a morning talk about starting strategy, roll jibes and tacks, and a review or the days drills all boats and sailors were on the water by 11 (minus 1 Kansas crew). Many starting drills were run followed by tacking/jibing/360 drills and then many practice races. We held three races to decide the winner of the weekend. KU won first place and SMU won second place. We were off the water by 2 with a short debrief and everyone on the road by 3. I would like to take this time to say thanks to Jake S, Blake B, Anderson J, and Allan V. for all there help this weekend. They took time out of their weekend to come to Dallas and help each and every one of the 35 sailors that participated in the clinic. I also would like to send a special thanks to Corinthian Sailing Club for always supporting SMU with practices, races, and clinics that we have. We would not be the team we are today without their help. I hope that everyone that made it to this clinic had a great time and I also hope that the people that missed this clinic will be able to attend the next SEISA clinic.
