Southern Hospitality RegattaHosted by University of South Alabama and Buccaneer Yacht Club Saturday November 15, 2008 Saturday morning greeted the teams with a brisk 20 kts steady westerly. First race started at 10am with steady 20kt and +25kt puffs. Six races were completed with many capsizes and wipe outs from most teams. Following a 1 hour postponement and lunch break with hopes of the wind slacking some we hit the water again at 1:30pm. The remaining races were sailed in identical conditions as the morning with a steady 20-25kts dying some for the last B set. All teams did a great job in these "survival conditions" throughout the day. It came down to when the 25kt puff hit, whoever could keep the boat under control would finish first. The spectators on shore got a kick out of watching the puff heading to the race course and suddenly hits and 4 boats capsize. There were several broken shackles and untied hiking straps however no breakdown points were awarded. All 16 races were completed. Thanks to race committee Sara Hall and USA Sailing Alumni Ashley Hall, Joseph Arbour, and Meghan Alesce. Rotation boat owner Jimmy Wacker and Dylan Wacker for keeping quick rotations and easy spectating. Markset/capsize recovery and committee boat owners Ken Kleinschrodt and Chuck Stewart for their loaned boats. And thanks for all the teams for making the drive to USA. Congratulations to Tulane skippers Chris Burd and Patrick Ryan crews Jenny O'Connell and Jessie Yoste. (See attached it the format is messed up) (9)=Retire
