Hi,
I am using FPFIT to calculate focal mechanism solution, which also
gives error estimates on strike, dip, and rake for the best fit solution. I
read the original FPFIT manual (Reasenberg and Oppenheimer, 1985) to
understand the details of error estimate and not clear about the meaning of
following sentence:
Having obtained the confidence interval for misfit function, we determine
the range of each solution parameter (uncertainty in strike, dip, and
rake), relative to the minimum-misfit value, within which the solution
Misfit is bounded by the confidence interval for misfit function.
I would be grateful if someone can clarify the meaning of "we determine the
range of each solution parameter, relative to minimum misfit value, within
which solution misfit (error in strike, dip, and rake) is bounded by the
confidence interval for misfit function".
