I agree with pretty much everything you have said here Mike.
I suspect that ditching some of the driver-languages will be controversial, but they do add a considerable burden to anyone like myself who wants to modify the core of Selenium without breaking any of the language drivers. To be honest, I have not actually tried very hard (how many of us actually have all of the drivers working?). I personally feel they should be split off as separate projects so that if there is no interest in a particular language driver it can die a natural death.
