It may not be valid xml documents, still it can be valid html documents.
In order to test with lantern, I just take the html part I need and clean out all &bnsp; &acute; etc.... (replace regular expression '&.*;' with '' in a capable editor), the same for <br> which should be replaced by <br/> (same for <p>). Indeed, it's not straightforward to use lantern but it proves to be useful to me with complex cases.
