Seems that I've figured it out myself. No proper page encoding was
specified in JS popup window,
so it probably worked correctly only with latin characters. I've added
to SF_UploadWindow.php
the following line:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<head>
before the head of the page and now it displays the Cyrillic just fine.
The text was taken from
mediawiki Special:Upload, that's why I wasn't unable to find it anywhere.
May I ask to add the forementioned <meta> string to SVN?
That would be better than patching every new version manually.
