Certainly one big centralized ontology is an interesting idea for a family of semantic wikis, but I doubt if it is applicable to Wikipedia. Wikipedia *is* decentralized, and if an extention requires changing this philosophy, then my guess is the extension is going to be rejected rather than the philosophy changed. I think one of the reasons why Wikipedia is so popular and has so many contributors is that it is created bottom-up: add content first, and then clean, organize, structure it. It would be interesting to see how ontologies emerge in a similar model. As S Page already pointed out in an earlier post, one can already predict some possible problems with creating a language-independent ontology by examining the existing problems with categorization in Wikipedia. It is often difficult to reach a consensus even within a given language edition, not to mention a "global" one. Therefore, I think it is good to assume that each language version of Wikipedia maintains its own ontology. Maybe the ontologies will converge in time due to some "soft" regulations, guidelines, etc., but they should not be coupled too tightly from the beginning. Summing up, IMHO the future versions of SMW could optionally support a centralized ontology approach too, but support for the decentralized one should definitely be retained. > Finally, I hope this scratch of my kind-of-chaotic toughs is helpful to > you. Although I generally disagree with you, it was both interesting and helpful nevertheless. Thanks!
