No, this is indeed a case of slightly too careless code, which assumes a property type to be nary without checking it explicitly. This problem will go away soon (and then be gone in SMW 1.4). The fix is not in SVN yet (but updating to SVN is discouraged anyway, since more internal changes are afoot).
