yes, your assumption is correct. 
All combination are allowed: 
LR -> left to right
RL -> right to left
TB -> top to bottom
BT -> bottom to top

It only works for dot ( see

Looking at the code I guess it's the direction in which the graph is build.
There are values such as TB or LR at two places. So I assume the
following:
rank_dir can have the these values:
TB = Top to bottom
LR = Left to right
I don't know if there are any other values are allowed especially the
reverse order of these two.
The file itself notes the Authors. I put these two in CC.

the SemanticResultFormats extension
