This worked in the end, with some pain caused by user-error. I
migrated all named extensions (excluding SB itself (why does SB
package SB?)) to the versions shipped with release 20120327 and
everything seems to be working fine (since I'm downgrading, I simply
dropped all smw_* tables from my database, re-initialized database
once 1.7 was installed and re-built semantic data).

While I was trying to get this to work (I made some mistakes) I went
off hunting in the Git logs for the commit identifying the 1.7.1
release of SMW. I understand that there is no branch or tag for this
release because it happened pre-git AFAICT. However, it would be easy
for someone to go back and tag that commit ... I couldn't find it
despite using "git log -S 1.7.1" and "git log --diff-filter='A' --
file RELEASE-NOTES-1.8"... although the commit matching what's in SB
must be somewhere in between those two...

Could someone with more chops find and tag it? (And report how they did it?)

Many thanks,
Dan.
