what about using/extending Semantic Forms for this?

This way you could avoid all the problems involved with editing
properties in free text and instead just edit form field values. As a
bonus you could utilize the input widgets available for SF without
having to reimplement them.

Of course, this is not even close to the modification of free form
text, but IMHO that would not be generally feasible, anyway. And SF
covers a huge part of SMW pages (no statistics, just my impression),
so this would already help a lot of people. Even more so considering
that your table editing would be geared towards wikis with many pages
having the same properties. Which as it happens are wikis that would
usually employ SF.
