In SMW 0.7, the factbox should report the error "Sorry, string representation very long stringblah blah... is too long for this site." It seems to work as expected on ontoworld, see http://ontoworld.org/wiki/Sandbox#Long_string_in_attribute It sounds like you're hitting some other limit before getting to that code. Do you get the error if you do a simple attribute assignment outside a template?
