the issue might have been caused by the xmlrpc2di plug-in. There is a
fix for that in 1.4 (85be85f) and master (ef4000a) branches.
Could please try and tell us whether or not this has fixed the problem
for you?

no, i have not moved or modified any of the plugins. they are all
straight from 1.4 source and installed permanently to plug-in dir.
should i put more debug somewhere?
