To answer my own question here, finally figured it out, at least partially:

There is a conf_dir option in dsm.conf, which makes sems to scan this
dir for *.conf files. Looks like the name of the files in conf_dir (e.g.
foo.conf) somehow relates to the name of the apps (foo.dsm) for you to
be able to set app-specific options, but I'm not really sure if that's
entirely true - at least it works for me now :)

Maybe someone can give a final answer on that one.
