The US government knowingly recruited at least 1,000 Nazis as spies during the
Cold War, newly disclosed records and interviews show.

The US military, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Federal Bureau
of Investigation (FBI) employed Nazis of all ranks as anti-Soviet “assets” as
recently as the 1990s, The New York Times reports.

In some cases, intelligence and law enforcement leaders concealed the US
government’s ties to some Nazis still living in the United States for at least
half a century after the war.

“They believed the ex-Nazis’ intelligence value against the Russians outweighed
what one official called ‘moral lapses’ in their service to the Third Reich,”
Eric Lichtblau wrote in the Times, ahead of the release of his book “The Nazis
Next Door: How America Became a Safe Haven for Hitler’s Men.”

Some of those spies had previously worked at the highest levels for the Nazis
during the Hitler’s Third Reich.

The CIA even recruited one SS officer after concluding he committed "minor war
crimes," according to the report.

Evidence of the US government’s ties to Nazi spies began to emerge in the
1970s, but records from declassified files and numerous interviews show the
collaboration ran far deeper than previously known.

In 1980, FBI officials withheld information from prosecutors about 16 suspected
Nazis living in America, the Times said.

The wide use of Nazi spies was spearheaded by “two titans of intelligence in
the 1950s,” J. Edgar Hoover, the director of the FBI, and Allen Dulles, the
head of the CIA, according to the report.
