For example, during one of my shifts in hospital, five patients died in intensive care alone, not including the ward, and the official record for that day in Kraljevo was three deaths. Instead of recording the cause of death as COVID, they entered unclassified pneumonia or some of the accompanying ailments the patient had,” Rade Panic said. He said that death certificates often list a general coronavirus infection which is not included in the official COVID-19 death count. The doctor is a member of the United Against Covid Council, an organization very critical of the authorities’ response to the pandemic. He is based in the city of Kraljevo. “Every patient in a COVID ward has to be listed as a COVID patient and regardless of whether they had some other illness they have to be recorded as dying of COVID,” Panic said. He cited an example from the hospital he works in when an infectologist recorded COVID as the cause of death for a patient who died during the night only to have the death certificate altered by the hospital chief in the morning. “He changed it to say that the cause of death was not COVID but unclassified pneumonia,” Panic said, adding that he is convinced the same thing is happening across Serbia. “We won’t publish the evidence until we can confirm it in at least five health care institutions, with documents. That will come either from some who has the jurisdiction, such as the police, or if fellow doctors feel brave enough to release evidence,” he said. Panic said that the people who gave the orders have to be found or else the blame will be laid on several doctors and the authorities will continue doing the same. According to the doctor, the claims of a low death rate result from manipulation of numbers and if the real numbers of new cases and deaths were revealed the authorities would have no justification in keeping restaurants and cafes, gyms and others open but would have to impose much stricter measures.
