Opinion poll: Leading EU countries want Ukraine in, but not Serbia Author:Beta, N1 Belgrade 3 minutes _____ The majority of people polled in the four leading European Union members support Ukraine's entry into the bloc while regarding Serbia's membership, there are more against than for. A new opinion poll by the YouGov analytical firm, conducted in March, among 1,020 and 2,046 adults in each country, showed that Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, wanted Ukraine, Montenegro and Northern Macedonia in the EU, with more FOR or AGAINST. For Ukraine, 22 percent was more in support of its EU membership than against it. For Montenegro’s membership, eight percent more were in support than against, while five percent more backed Northern Macedonia than were against. Serbia was less liked as an EU member, with an average of 4.75 percent more against it than those who supported it. Two percent more of the polled opposed Albania's membership, while 32 percent were against Turkey joining the bloc. Individually, only in Spain, more people favoured Serbia's EU membership than those against it. Twenty-three 23 percent of French, 27 percent of Germans, 33 percent of Italians and 41 percent of Spaniards believe that Serbia should be allowed to join the EU. At the same time, 42 percent of respondents in France, 41 percent in Germany, 37 percent in Italy and 23 percent in Spain believe that Serbia should not be allowed to join the EU. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine more than a month ago, President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the EU to urgently let Ukraine into the EU. However, although there has been much support for speeding up the process, it is unlikely that Ukraine will soon join the EU. Despite that, Ukraine has net support for EU membership, with the highest in Spain, where six out of ten respondents want to see it in the bloc, and only 14 percent were against it. Forty-six percent of Germans, 45 percent of Italians and 42 percent of French favoured Ukraine's membership, while 30 percent in each country was against.
